Functional Capacity Evaluations

Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE) are an objective measure of your ability to perform work related activities such as lifting, carrying pushing pulling. Testing is performed for a variety of reasons including the establishment of return-to-work guidelines or as entry criteria for a work conditioning program. FCE’s are frequently requested to assist physicians in establishing permanency in workers’ compensation cases or assisting in the filing of disability claims. While FCE’s can be performed by either a physical therapist or occupational therapist, the evaluator should have completed a certification course from one of the recognized FCE testing systems. Typically, FCE’s are requested between 6 and 12 months after an injury or the most recent surgery.

Functional Capacity Evaluations can be requested by a healthcare provider (MD, DO, PA, DC, etc.), insurance carrier, attorney, or the patient, and is typically covered by workers’ compensation, no-fault and even some private health insurances.
